Organizing Dashboards with Folders​

Dashboard folders provide a hierarchical way to organize the dashboards that you can access. Open Dashboards from the top navigation to use the folder tree beside the dashboard list.

Selecting a folder filters the list to dashboards assigned to that folder. The Folder filter above the list stays synchronized with the folder tree, so you can navigate from either control. Select Uncategorized to show dashboards that are not assigned to a folder, or clear the selection to show all accessible dashboards.

Use the arrow beside a folder to expand or collapse its children. You can also collapse the entire folder panel to leave more space for the dashboard list.

Creating and managing folders​

If your role can create dashboard folders, select the + button in the folder panel. Enter a folder name and optionally select a parent folder. Leaving the parent empty creates a top-level folder.

Folder names:

  • are limited to 100 characters;
  • must be unique within the same parent, ignoring case and surrounding spaces;
  • cannot match the direct parent folder name.

Available actions appear when you hover over a folder. Depending on your folder ownership and role permissions, you can rename or delete it. Deleting a folder also deletes its child folders, but it does not delete dashboards. Dashboards from the deleted folder tree become uncategorized.

Moving dashboards​

Open a dashboard's actions menu and select Move to folder. Choose a top-level folder first, then optionally choose one of its descendant folders. If you do not choose a descendant, the dashboard is placed directly in the selected top-level folder. Clear the parent selection to move the dashboard to Uncategorized.

You must be allowed to edit the dashboard and write to the destination folder. Folders that you can browse but cannot write to are read-only and cannot be used as move destinations.

Visibility and permissions​

Folder visibility never grants access to a dashboard. The dashboard list still uses Superset's standard dashboard access rules.

Administrators can see all folders. Other users see folders they own and folders that contain dashboards they can access. Ancestor folders may also appear so that visible descendants remain navigable. Creating, renaming, deleting, and moving dashboards are separate permissions and are also restricted by folder ownership. A non-administrator cannot delete a folder tree that contains a descendant owned by another user.
